I’ll be honest, it even happens in the “progressive” parts of Texas.

Umhm. Admitting you’re not a person of faith can get you killed in these parts.

This is generally why it’s a good idea to be quieter about one’s religion in most southern states, apparently. Alabama has it bad, but Mississippi and Tennessee are terrifying, too.
